Alibaba has launched the latest version of its artificial intelligence chatbot, Tongyi Qianwen 2.5, in a strategic move to establish itself as a major player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape dominated by U.S.-based platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. As reported by The Economic Times in the article titled “Alibaba’s main AI app debuts strongly in effort to rival ChatGPT,” the new model reportedly surpasses the previous generation in core performance metrics while delivering more cost-effective operation.

Tongyi Qianwen 2.5 marks a significant upgrade in Alibaba’s generative AI capabilities, enhancing text comprehension, reasoning, and image generation. The software has been made available for integration with various Chinese applications through Alibaba’s DingTalk enterprise workspace and the e-commerce ecosystem Taobao. These integrations are expected to broaden the AI’s practical applications in business, education, and customer service.

The release underscores increasing competition within China’s domestic AI scene, where major technology firms including Baidu, Tencent, and ByteDance are accelerating efforts to develop homegrown alternatives to ChatGPT. Since Alibaba’s cloud unit launched its large language model last year, it has released multiple updates, with version 2.5 touted to use only one-tenth the power of the most advanced model available to date, according to the company.

Chinese regulators have so far greenlit more than 40 large language models for public use, signaling growing state support for AI innovation, while maintaining oversight on content and data governance. Amid mounting geopolitical tensions and export controls affecting access to advanced semiconductor technologies, China’s emphasis on self-reliant AI research and development has become increasingly pronounced.

Alibaba’s recent AI advancements were unveiled during a company event in Beijing, where it also introduced new cloud-based development tools, including an AI-as-a-service platform that allows users to build custom models using their own data. This further aligns with Alibaba’s broader strategy to restructure its business, sharpen its focus on cloud technology, and remain competitive across core verticals.

The company’s push into generative AI also comes at a pivotal moment for its cloud division, which has been undergoing leadership changes and facing pressure to assert its relevance against domestic peers and international rivals.
