India Smartphone Shipments Hit Six-Year Q1 Low as Price Hikes and Weak Demand Bite

India’s smartphone market recorded its weakest first-quarter performance in six years, as rising prices and subdued consumer demand weighed on shipments, according to new data from Counterpoint Research.

In a report highlighted by The Economic Times in its article titled “India smartphone shipments fall to 6-year low in Q1 amid price hikes: Counterpoint Research,” overall shipments declined sharply year-on-year, reflecting a combination of inflationary pressures and lengthening replacement cycles among buyers. The slowdown marks a notable reversal for what has long been one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets globally.

Analysts attribute much of the downturn to higher average selling prices, driven by component cost increases and a strategic push by manufacturers toward premium devices. While brands have benefited from higher margins on costlier models, the shift has reduced affordability for a large segment of India’s price-sensitive consumer base. Entry-level and mid-range devices, which historically fueled volume growth, saw weaker traction during the quarter.

The report also underscores that macroeconomic conditions continue to shape buying behavior. Persistent inflation and cautious consumer spending have delayed upgrade cycles, with many users opting to hold on to existing devices longer. Seasonal factors and a quieter product launch calendar during the early part of the year further contributed to softer shipment volumes.

Despite the overall contraction, premium smartphone segments showed relative resilience, supported by demand from urban consumers and increased financing options. This divergence highlights a broader structural transition within the market, where value growth is increasingly decoupled from shipment growth.

Industry observers expect a gradual recovery in the coming quarters, aided by festive season demand, promotional activity, and a potential stabilization in pricing. However, the near-term outlook remains contingent on how manufacturers balance pricing strategies with volume ambitions in a market where affordability remains a critical factor.
