Why AI Stocks Are Shrugging Off the Highest Treasury Yields in Months

The old rule said rising bond yields kill growth stocks. Somebody forgot to tell the AI trade. Even as the 10-year Treasury yield has climbed sharply in recent weeks — a level that historically pressures high-multiple technology names — a clutch of AI-linked equities has continued to set new highs, leaving investors scrambling for an explanation. That explanation, according to CNBC’s Jim Cramer, comes down to one thing: the earnings power that AI infrastructure is now generating is strong enough to override the discount-rate math that normally drags growth stocks lower when yields surge.

Cramer’s argument, detailed in a CNBC analysis published October 5, is that the market is no longer treating AI leaders purely as speculative growth plays. Instead, investors are beginning to price them as cash-flow compounders — companies whose near-term earnings revisions are moving fast enough to more than offset the headwind of higher discount rates. That is a meaningful shift in market psychology, and it has real consequences for how portfolios get built from here.

The Yield Headwind That Isn’t Slowing Things Down

Under conventional valuation logic, when the 10-year Treasury yield rises, the present value of future earnings falls. Growth companies — whose profits are weighted heavily toward years out — should feel that pain the most acutely. For most of the past two years, that relationship held. The 2022 rate-hike cycle wiped out a significant portion of the Nasdaq’s value precisely because yields spiked. So why isn’t the same movie playing now?

Cramer’s answer is that the earnings revisions for top AI names are coming in so far above expectations that they are effectively resetting the denominator in the valuation equation faster than rising rates can erode it. When a company’s forward earnings estimates jump 20 or 30 percent in a matter of months, a 50-basis-point move in the 10-year yield becomes a secondary concern. The market, Cramer argues, is rationally repricing these stocks based on genuine fundamental momentum, not ignoring risk — it is just that the risk is being swamped by the upside.

What This Means for the Broader AI Investment Landscape

The stakes here extend well beyond stock-picking. If Cramer’s thesis holds — that AI earnings power has become durable enough to decouple from the traditional rate-sensitivity of growth equities — it implies that capital will continue flowing aggressively into AI infrastructure even in a higher-for-longer rate environment. That matters enormously for the companies building the picks-and-shovels layer of the AI economy. GPU cloud providers, data center operators, and chip designers all benefit when investors decide AI spending is a recurring cost of doing business rather than a discretionary bet on a distant future.

It also has implications for how venture capital prices late-stage AI rounds. If public markets are willing to award premium multiples to AI companies despite elevated yields, private valuations get a floor — and possibly a ceiling that keeps moving up. The GPU cloud sector in particular has been watching public comps closely for exactly this kind of signal. A market that refuses to punish AI multiples even when bond yields climb is a market that is telling founders and funders alike: the structural bet on AI is not going away, regardless of what the Federal Reserve does next. That confidence, more than any single earnings report, may be the most important market signal of the moment.
