Not everyone is buying either argument, and at least one expert thinks conflating the two does real damage to how the industry thinks about risk.

Altman’s comments arrive as OpenAI continues to dominate the competitive AI landscape, with rivals including Elon Musk’s xAI and Google DeepMind racing to close capability gaps. The singularity framing has obvious strategic upside for OpenAI — it positions the company not just as a market leader but as the organization that already shepherded humanity through its most consequential technological inflection point. Whether Altman genuinely believes the singularity has arrived or is making a calculated rhetorical move, the consequences of the framing are real. If the public and policymakers accept that AI has already surpassed meaningful human oversight, the urgency for building governance frameworks — and hardening the infrastructure those systems run on — risks being replaced by a kind of resigned awe. That is exactly the wrong lesson to draw from a breach that, at its core, came down to a leaked token.
